Kill Bill vol.1

A film by Quentin Tarantino

The fourth film by Quentin Tarantino is an epic tale of one woman’s quest for justice presented in two parts. It’s both an homage to and a re-imagining of the spaghetti western, Hong Kong action flicks, samurai films and anime. What the hell can I say about this flick besides WOW! Being a huge fan of Hong Kong cinema, samurai flicks, and anime, I was apprehensive about what Tarantino might do to my beloved genres. I suppose I have to admit to being wrong, because I totally dug this film. The only problem I have is of course Miramax’s decision to chop the flick into two separate movies. I for one would have been more than happy to sit through the next ninety or so minutes. Unfortunately, the studio execs at Miramax (I won’t mention any names Bob and Harvey Weinstein) decided that we, the movie going public didn’t have the attention span for a three-plus hour action/revenge flick. Of course these are also the two guys who let the Lord of the Rings deal slip through their fingers because they wanted Peter Jackson to make a single two hour film that encompassed all three books. I guess we all know who’s laughing now. Anyway, I don’t know what I liked better, the cool ass anime sequence explaining the origin of Lucy Lui’s character, O-Ren Ishii or Uma Thurman literally fucking eviscerating eighty-eight sword wielding baddies with her katana, or the final battle between Uma and Lucy, or Chiaki Kuriyama as O-Ren’s bodyguard, Go-Go Yubari playing with her “yo-yo.” Oh what the hell, the whole flick rocks ass and I’m of course waiting on freaking tenterhooks for vol.2 which comes out February 20, 2004. Go see it, but if you don’t like it, don’t blame me! I’m looking at you Scott and Jen!
